Cameron Jaymes’ new album, Everything You’ve Been Looking For, released on April 20. It started strong with the first track “more than a day,” including strong vocals with dynamic range as well as excellent background instrumentals.
The second track “Trouble” sounds remarkably like a strange mixture between Maroon 5 and Santana. To be honest, I never thought I would ever use those two names in a sentence together, or even listen to music that is reminiscent of both. The strangest thing about the song is simply that it works. Although it is definitely different than I would have expected, “Trouble” actually has a memorable sound that I could see being added to my Mp3 player.
However, the third and fourth track did not do nearly as much to impress me. They were extremely repetitive with lyrics that lacked substance. In fact, they came out more preachy and whiny than I would have thought possible after hearing the first two tracks. These songs also amazed me, but not in a good way.
Track 5 “Fine” was probably the best song on this album. According to a recent press release this track will be going to radio this month, which is not surprising given its “playability.” From the beginning, it takes hold of you and makes love to your ears, leaving you humming the tune and wanting more.
Although that song makes you want more, the rest of the CD is unfulfilling.
In fact, the rest of the album is second rate at best. The singing is amazing and the Music isn’t lacking in any way, but the mesh between the two is sometimes awkward.
Also many of the lyrics sound like something from a Disney movie or perhaps a Church song which would be fine if that was the genre Jaymes was going for. However, according to his biography his influences include U2, Coldplay, and Switchfoot.
The music on the latter part of the album seems to have very little, if any, influence from any of these Bands.
There is a ton of potential in Jaymes Reunion, but with this album he could hope for little more than to be a one hit wonder.
